Portraits

embroidery, gouache, collage on inkjet photo

Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.
— Oscar Wilde

Inspired by traditional portrait photography, this series attempts to impose identity onto individuals through mask-like designs, and is an extension of my past work with embroidery.

The bright, soft lines of thread contrast with the dark, hard lines of the photographs, recalling the duality of identity. As seems to be the norm in this age of dating apps, each person’s identity is reduced to their appearance.
